‘Chrono Trigger’ celebrates 30th anniversary with bumper vinyl boxset

Fans are speculating that a remake is also on the way

Final Fantasy creators Square Enix are celebrating the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger with a bumper vinyl boxset.

Released back in 1995, Chrono Trigger is a turn-based role-playing game that sees a group of spunky adventurers out to save their world from the repercussions of time-travelling shenanigans. The game went on to sell more than 5million copies while its score, composed by Yasunori Mitsuda with assistance from veteran Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu, is regarded as one of the greatest gaming soundtracks of all time.

Over the weekend, a pair of orchestral concerts celebrating the game’s 30th anniversary took place in Tokyo and now Square Enix have confirmed details of a bumper Chrono Trigger vinyl boxset.

The ‘Original Soundtrack Vinyl LP Boxset’ features 64 tracks from the Chrono Trigger soundtrack across 4 LPs. Each LP jacket comes with “premium artwork” created by Akira Toriyama during the game’s original release and the boxset also includes a “commemorative message” written by composer Yasunori Mitsuda. The vinyl is set to release in April and pre-orders are now live.

A CD featuring orchestral reimagings of the Chrono Trigger soundtrack has also been confirmed. “The album is composed of 10 tracks that allow you to relive iconic story moments, such as ‘Secret Of The Forest / Wind Scene’, ‘Guardia Millennial Fair / A Strange Happening’ and ‘World Revolution / Last Battle’,” reads an official description. “We hope you enjoy these sublime, timelessly beloved melodies, brought to life through rich orchestral resonance.” ‘Chrono Trigger Orchestral Arrangement – Melodies Across Time’ is set to get a physical launch this January but details about a streaming release are still to be confirmed.

At the anniversary concerts, Square Enix displayed concept art from Chrono Trigger’s original development alongside what appeared to be updated versions of classic characters. Since then, fans have been speculating that the company is currently working on a remake of the classic RPG. Others just want the original Chrono Trigger to be released on PC and modern consoles.
